4、izingtheBabelstorytomotivateresistancetoauniversalizingsecularhumanismanditslaws(whicharecalledBabylonian).Thoughsuspiciousofpoliticalunitieslikeempires,andinfavorofdecentralizationandindividualismthatcangobeyondthelaw,thesediscoursesinsistthatresistanceisinthenameofaunifiedtruth,oftenprese
5、ntedinstronglyimperialistterms.SlippagesbetweenunityandmultiplicityintheseallusionstoBabylon—partiallyproducedbyamélangeofpre-andpost-Enlightenmentvalues—arefoundtobehomologouswiththestructureoftheexceptionandwithacommoncanonicalmodeofbiblicalinterpretation.Whenthesedynamicsarereadalongside
