4、iesofthoughtsuchasmotivation,purpose,emotionandcontrol).Masteringlinguisticknowledgeofphonetics,vocabularyandgrammarishelpfultodecodethewordsymbols.However,intheprocessofreading,manyChinesestudentsalreadypossesstheaboveknowledge,buttheystillcannotcompre
5、hendthetextscompletely,sounderstandingtheculturalcontentofwhatonereadsisacrucialfactorinreadingcomprehension.Becauselanguageisthecarrierofculture,people'swordsanddeedsreflectcertainculturalconnotationconsciouslyorunconsciously.Everysocialcommunicationpo
6、ssessesitsowncertainthoughtpattern,value,custom,andwayoflife.For“Theinfluenceofbackgroundtocomprehensionislargerthanlanguageknowledge.”(Ma,1995).Manystudiesindicatethatwithoutsufficientbackgroundknowledgeofsocialculture,thereaderscannotcomprehendthedeep
7、meaningoftexts.Thispaperwillexaminethecross-culturaldifficultiesintheprocessofEnglishreadinginthreeaspects:whatthemaindifficultiesareinreading,whythesedifficultiesexistandhowtoreduceandeliminatethemtoachievetheexactcomprehension. II.TheRoleofCulturalKn
