2、hereitoughttobegoing,Idon’tthinkeitherofuswouldhaveimaginedI’dbestandinghere,nearlythirtyyearslater,abletohonestlysayIamhonouredtogiveaspeechnamedtohonourhim.But,ladiesandgentlemen,despiteanydisagreementsbackinthosedays,onethingwasneverinquestion–thattheLaborPartywasbothbigenoughtoincludeour
3、differences–andmoreimportantthananyoneofus.28Youallknowthatthe1970sand80sinNSWwereatimeofinternalpartyconteststhatmaketoday’sso-called‘factionalbrawls’lookmild.Wewereall–Left,Right,unaligned–awarewewerefightingoverthefutureoftheLaborParty.Fightingoverwhichpolicieswouldtakepriority,whichrules
4、wouldprevail,overwhatexactlyLabor’stimelessgoalofabetterlifeforworkingAustraliansmeantinanewandchangingworld.Attimes,thosecontestswerebitterandverypublic.Despitethat,despitefront-pagenewspaperstoriesandblazingrowsonthefloorofStateConference,whichNevilleWranhimselfwasnotshyabouttakingpartin,N
5、evillebecamethelongestcontinuouslyservingNSWPremieruptothattimeandin1983FederalLaborcametopowerandstayedingovernmentforthirteenyears.28Ladiesandgentlemen,forthemenandwomenofthePartyinthosedays,wehadourdisagreements,wehadourideologicaldivisionsandattimeswehadourverybitterpersonaldifferences–b
6、utweknewthePartycamebeforethemall.Wefoughthard,andifwelost–andbeingontheLeftIoftenlost,actuallyIalwayslost–wesetoursightsonthenextissue.AndwesetasideourdifferencesinopiniontoworktogetherwhentheParty’sinterestswerethreatenedorelectioncampaignsrolledaround.ThePartywas,andwasknowntobe,diverse.B
