4、hapter,weagreethatgeneralizabilityisessential,butwedeconstructecologicalvalidityandarguethatthetermisoftenmisusedandmisrepresentedinamannerthatmayultimatelystiflethedevelopmentofmethodsforachievinggeneralizability.Forthoseofyouwhoansweredbothquestionswitharesounding“yes,”andtheprese
5、ntauthorscertainlyhavedoneso,wemustemphasizethatourgoalisnottounderminetheidealofvalidity–everysocialscientist’sdesireistoconductresearchthatisgeneralizabletoatargetecology.Indeed,wemeantoholdthisidealwiththehighestregard,andbydoingso,wewillrevealthesinscommittedinthenameofecologica
