3、implefoodtheycouldfind.  IwasexpectingtoseethebleakmoorsthatappearinDickens’novels.WhatIdiscoveredwasfartherfrommyassumptions.RatherthanthesickeningpollutionofDickens’factories,IfoundsouthernEnglandfresh,dewyandgreen.Everythingispicturesque,fromthefragrantwoodlandsdowntothewhitechi

4、nateacups.  Asanovelistandjournalist,DickensrepresentedallofLondon.OfcourseIhadtospendafewdaysinLondonduringmyEnglishvacation.SofromHampshireIgotonatrainandarrivedatWaterlooStation.ThetripfromruralHampshiretotheheartofLondonisanexcitingtransition,aneffortlessswitchbetweencountryand

5、metropolis.AftersteppingoutofWaterloo,themagnificenceofLondonisseenineverysquare,everybridgeandeverysteeple.Thecrowdsaremodern,butjustascolorfulasthosedescribedbyDickens.LondonisstillaslivelyasitwasoverahundredyearsagoinDickens’time,butthecityhasalsochangedsignificantly.  Inthenine

6、teenthcentury,Londonwasoneofthelargestcitiesintheworld.Thecitywasincrediblydirty,butitwasthisplaceanditspeoplethatinspiredthetimelesstalesofDickens,whowouldwanderthestreetsofLondonforhourswhiledevelopingplotsandcharactersinhismind.  IwanderedthroughLondon,tryingtobeadventurouswitho

7、utmissingthefamousattractions.IkeptaneyeoutforthingsthatIcoulddescribeasDickensian.Therearechimney-potsanddarkcobblestonestreets,butitisthecrowdsthatremindmemostofDickens’novels.  OnthetrainbacktoHampshirefromLondon,IwatchedthegreenhillsrollbyandcouldimagineDickens’charactersliving
