2、alandpoliticalidentity,derivedfromtheconsciouspromotionoftheregionalconceptbyitsstates,societies,andpeoples,iswhatmakesitadistinctideainthelatterpartofthe20thcentury.byAmitavAcharyaSoutheastAsiaisanimaginedregion,itsphysical,political,socialandculturaldiver
3、sitybeingtooimmensetoqualifyitashavingadistinctivepersonality.Yet,whatgivesitcoherencemustcountasoneofthefinestactsofcollectiveself-imaginationundertakenbyaregionsnationalistpoliticaleliteinthewakeoftheirliberationfromEuropeanandAmericancolonialism.Aswithna
4、tionalismandnation-states,regionsmaybeimagined,designed,constructedanddefended.ThisapproachtothestudyofregionsandregionalismsharesmanyelementsofthepoliticalscientistBenedictAndersonsapproachtothestudyofnationalismandthenation-state,assetoutinhisworkImagined
5、Communities(Verso,London,1991).Therearemanyparallelsbetweenimaginingthenationandimaginingtheregion.Particularly,AndersonsfocusonthecollectiveimaginingofthenationbyanationalisteliteismirroredintheSoutheastAsianregion-buildingasaprocessofelitesocialisation.Bu
6、tdrawingupontheworkofsomeotherscholars,itisalsoimportanttohighlighttheroleoftraditionalpolitical-culturalframeworksandpre-capitalistcommerceinbuildingmodernsocialidentities.Indeed,thetermproximitiesmoreaccuratelyreflectsthedegreeofsocialisationandbondingevi
7、dentinthecaseofSoutheastAsiathancommunities,whichisusedtodescribenations.Althoughacertainsenseofcommunitycandevelopwithinaregion,ashasbeenthecasewithSoutheastAsia,thecontinuedsalienceofstatesovereignty(despiteclaimsaboutitsallegedobsolescenceanderosion)make
8、sregionalcommunitiesfundamentallydifferentfromnation-states.SoutheastAsiaisstillaregioninhabitedbyhighlysovereignty-consciousactors.Inthelightofthetumultuouseventsofthepasttwoyears,itbecomesadditionall
