2、Walker1971;ChanceandChance1974;Roenke1978:Ball1983;Moir1987;Ison1990;Rivers1998)revealthatwindowglassgraduallyincreasedinthicknessthroughoutthenineteenthcentury.Numerousequationshavebeenderivedforpredictinganinitialconstructiondatebasedonthemeanthicknessofwindowgl
3、assfragmentsrecoveredfromasite.However,therearequestionsconcerningtheaccuracyandapplicationoftheseequations,especiallywhendealingwithsitesthathavealongperiodofoccupation.Bylookingatthewholedistributionofwindowglassrecoveredfromasiteitmaybepossibletoconductwindowgl
4、assdatinganalysisatsitesthatwereconsideredlessthanperfectcandidates.Lookingatthewholedistributionofrecoveredwindowglassmayalsoprovideinformationaboutthelengthofoccupation,thebuildingofadditionsorremodeling,andtheuseofscavengedmaterials.Manyofthestudiesthathavedeve
5、lopedregressionformulasforchronologicaldatingbasedonthethicknessofwindowglassfragments,cautionusagainstapplyingthemtocertaintypesofsites.Suchas,sitesthathaveoccupationslongerthansixtyyears,becausethereplacementofwindowsoveranextendedperiodoftimeismorelikelytoskewt
6、heresults(Moir1987:78;McKelway1992:104;Rivers1998:12).Thesestudiessuggestapplyingtheirformulatostructuresthathavelessthanthirtyyearsofoccupation.But,itismyexperiencethatstructureswithshortperiodsofoccupationareoftenintheminorityofsitesstudied.Furthermore,ifinforma
7、tionisavailableabouttheperiodofoccupationthenthedateof,orapproximatedateof,constructionisusuallyalsoknown.Somestudiesalsowarnusaboutthedifferencesbetweencrownglassandcylinderglass(Ison1990:100)andsuggestdatingthemseparately(Rivers1998:7).Thetaskofdistinguishingthe
8、differencebetweenalargepaneofcrownglassandalargepaneofcylinderglassmaynotbetoodifficult,butwhenthereisapilecontainingseveralhundredfragmentsofmixedcrown
