3、ionsandearthworks.1.INTRODUCTIONTheinvestigationandre-useevaluationofmanyIrishboulderclaysoilspresentsdifficultiesforboththegeotechnicalengineerandtheroaddesignengineer.Theseglacialtillorboulderclaysoilsaremainlyoflowplasticityandhaveparticlesizesrangingfr

4、omclaytoboulders.Mostofourboulderclaysoilscontainvaryingproportionsofsand,gravel,cobblesandbouldersinaclayorsiltmatrix.Theamountoffinesgovernstheirbehaviourandthesiltcontentmakesitveryweathersusceptible.Moisturecontentscanbehighlyvariablerangingfromaslowas

5、7%forthehardgreyblackDublinboulderclayupto20-25%forMidland,South-WestandNorth-Westlightgreyboulderclaydeposits.Theabilityofboulderclaysoilstotake-infreewateriswellestablishedandpoorplanningofearthworksoftenamplifiesthis.Thefinesoilconstituentsaregenerallys

6、ensitivetosmallincreasesinmoisturecontentwhichoftenleadtolossinstrengthandrenderthesoilsunsuitableforre-useasengineeringfill.Manyofourboulderclaysoils(especiallythosewithintermediatetypesiltsandfinesandmatrix)havebeenrejectedattheselectionstage,butgoodplan
