3、orks.1.INTRODUCTIONTheinvestigationandre-useevaluationofmanyIrishboulderclaysoilspresentsdifficultiesforboththegeotechnicalengineerandtheroaddesignengineer.Theseglacialtillorboulderclaysoilsaremainlyoflowplasticityandhaveparticlesizesrangingfromclaytoboulders.Mostofourboulderclaysoil

4、scontainvaryingproportionsofsand,gravel,cobblesandbouldersinaclayorsiltmatrix.Theamountoffinesgovernstheirbehaviourandthesiltcontentmakesitveryweathersusceptible.Moisturecontentscanbehighlyvariablerangingfromaslowas7%forthehardgreyblackDublinboulderclayupto20-25%forMidland,South-West

5、andNorth-Westlightgreyboulderclaydeposits.Theabilityofboulderclaysoilstotake-infreewateriswellestablishedandpoorplanningofearthworksoftenamplifiesthis.Thefinesoilconstituentsaregenerallysensitivetosmallincreasesinmoisturecontentwhichoftenleadtolossinstrengthandrenderthesoilsunsuitabl

6、eforre-useasengineeringfill.Manyofourboulderclaysoils(especiallythosewithintermediatetypesiltsandfinesandmatrix)havebeenrejectedattheselectionstage,butgoodplanningshowsthattheycaninfactfulfilspecificationrequirementsintermsofcompactionandstrength.Theselectionprocessshouldaimtomaximis

7、etheuseoflocallyavailablesoilsandwithcarefulevaluationitispossibletouseorincorporate‘poorormarginalsoils’withinfillareasandembankments.Fillmaterialneedstobeplacedatamoisturecontentsuchthatitisneithertoowettobestableandtrafficableortoodrytobeproperlycompacted.Highmoisturecontent/lowst
