3、acethebeginningsofphysicswiththework5-6Largedistancesdone350yearsagobyGalileo,andtocallhimthefirstphysicist.Untilthattime,thestudyofmotionhadbeenaphilosophicalonebasedonargumentsthatcould5-7Shortdistancesbethoughtupinone'shead.MostoftheargumentshadbeenpresentedbyA
4、ristotleandotherGreekphilosophers,andweretakenas"proven."Galileowasskeptical,anddidanexperimentonmotionwhichwasessentiallythis:Heallowedaballtorolldownaninclinedtroughandobservedthemotion.Hedidnot,however,justlook;hemeasuredhowfartheballwentinhowlongatime.Thewayto
5、measureadistancewaswellknownlongbeforeGalileo,buttherewerenoaccuratewaysofmeasuringtime,particularlyshorttimes.Althoughhelaterdevisedmoresatisfactoryclocks(thoughnotliketheonesweknow),Galileo'sfirstexperimentsonmotionweredonebyusinghispulsetocountoffequalin-terval
