2、ialevidencethatmediasourceshaveidentifiablepoliticalslants,buttherehasbeenrelativelylittlestudyuntilrecentlyoftheeffectsonpoliticalviewsandbehaviorsofmediabiasoraccess.Thispaperreportstheresultsofanaturalfieldexperimenttomeasuretheeffectofexposuretonewspapersonpoliticalbeha

3、viorandopinion.TheWashingtonDCareaisservedbytwomajornewspapers,theWashingtonTimesandtheWashingtonPost.WerandomlyassignedindividualseithertoreceiveafreesubscriptiontotheWashingtonPost,toreceiveafreesubscriptiontotheWashingtonTimes,ortoacontrolgroup.Wethenconductedapublicopin

4、ionsurveyafterthe2005Virginiagubernatorialelection.WefindthatthoseassignedtothePosttreatmentgroupwereeightpercentagepointsmorelikelytovotefortheDemocraticcandidateforgovernorthanthoseassignedtothecontrolgroup.Wefindsimilarbutweakerevidenceofshiftsinpublicopiniononspecificis

7、naandKaplan2007),butalsomerelybychoosingwhattoreport(GeorgeandWaldfogel2006).Thereissubstantialevidencethatmediasourceshaveidentifiablepoliticalslants,buttherehasbeenrelativelylittlestudyoftheeffectsofmediabiasontheviewsandbehaviorofmediaconsumers,oroftheeffectofmereexposur
