2、ndtheUnitedStates,hasgrownatanaverageannualrateofabout10percentoverthelast30years.In2011,itsGrossDomesticProduct(GDP)reachednearlyRMB47.2trillion(aboutUS$7.3trillion),up9.2percentyear-on-year.Thisgrowthratecomparedwithonlya1.7percentexpansionintheUSeconomyforthatyear.Thenation’s‘open
3、-doorpolicy’since1978,whichpromotedforeigntradeandinvestment,hasbeenakeydriverofitsstrongeconomicgrowth.FurthersupportingsuchgrowthwasChina’sentryintotheWorldTradeOrganizationin2001.Whileexportsremainanimportantgrowthdriver,Chinaisshiftingmoreofitsfocustowardsdomesticconsumptiontored
4、uceeconomicdependenceonexternalmarketsandencouragedomesticeconomicactivity.Meanwhile,China’sleadersfacegrowingpressuretoreducethewideninggapbetweenthewealthyeliteandthepoormajority.Thegovernmenthaspromisedtoraiseminimumwagesby13percentayearthrough2015.InDecember2011,thegovernmentanno
5、uncedthatitwouldcutthetaxbaseofmicro-andsmall-sizedenterprisesby50percent,whilethetaxratewouldremainat20percent.Thispolicy,whichrunsfrom1January2012to31December2015,seekstofacilitatethegrowthofsuchbusinesses,especiallysignificantlycash-strappedones.Chinarecordeda9.7percentyear-on-yea
6、rjumpinforeigndirectinvestmenttoUS$116billionin2011.Alsoduringthatyear,foreign-investedenterprisesaccountedfor52.4percentofChina’sexportsand49.6percentofitsimports.EconomicCentresBeijingChina’scapital,Beijing,isamongthenation’smostdevelopedcities,withtheservicesectoraccountingforasig
