1、HAIRSTYLEASANADAPTIVEMEANSOFDISPLAYINGPHENOTYPICQUALITYNorbertMeskoandTamasBereczkeiUniversityofP6csAlthoughfacialfeaturesthatareconsideredbeautifulhavebeeninvesti-gatedacrossculturesusingtheframeworkofsexualselectiontheory,theeffectsofheadhaironestheticevaluationshaver
2、arelybeenexaminedfromanevolutionaryperspective.Inthepresentstudytheeffectsofsixhair-styles(short,medium-length,long,disheveled,knot[hairbun],unkempt)onfemalefacialattractivenesswereexaminedinfourdimensions(feminin-ity,youth,health,sexiness)relativetofaceswithoutvisibleh
3、eadhair("ba-sicface").Threeevolutionaryhypothesesweretested(coveringhypothesis,healthymatetheory,andgoodgenesmodel);onlythegoodgenesmodelwassupportedbyourdata.Accordingtothistheory,individualswhocanaf-fordthehighcostsoflonghairarethosewhohavegoodphenotypicandgeneticqual
4、ity.Inaccordancewiththishypothesis,wefoundthatonlylongandmedium-lengthhairhadasignificantpositiveeffectonratingsofwomen'sattractiveness;theotherhairstylesdidnotinfluencetheevalua-tionoftheirphysicalbeauty.Furthermore,thesetwohairstylescausedamuchlargerchangeinthedimensi
5、onofhealththanintherestofthedimen-sions.Finally,maleratersconsideredthelonger-hairedfemalesubjects'healthstatusbetter,especiallyifthesubjectswerelessattractivewomen.Thepossiblerelationshipsbetweenfacialattractivenessandhairaredis-cussed,andalternativeexplanationsarepres
