3、ficoligonucleotidesoninfectedcellRNA.TheregionsofthreeclonespJMS1010,pJS112andpJS92,whichtogetherencompassthesurfaceproteingenehavebeensequencedbythechainterminationmethod.Thesequenceoftheprimarytranslationproduct,deducedfromtheDNAsequence,predictsapolypeptideof1235amin

4、oacidswithamolecularweightof136600.Thispolypeptidedisplaysthefeaturescharacteristicofagroup1membraneprotein;anamino-terminalsignalsequenceandcarboxy-terminalmembraneandcytoplasmicdomains.Thereare21potentialglycosylationsitesinthepolypeptideandacysteine-richregioninthevi

5、cinityofthetransmembranedomain.Duringmaturationproteolyticprocessingofthepolypeptideoccursandatpositions624to628thesequenceArgArg-Ala-Arg-Argisfound,whichissimilartoanumberofbasicsequencesinvolvedinthecleavageofenvelopedRNAvirusglycoproteins.ThefusogenicpropertiesoftheM

6、HVsurfaceproteindonotappeartocorrelatewithastronglyhydrophobicregionattheputativeaminoterminusofthecarboxy-terminatcleavageproduct.INTRODUCTIONCoronavirusesarepleomorphic,envelopedviruseswhichreplicateinthecytoplasmofvertebratecellsandareassociatedwithdiseasesofeconomic

7、importance(Siddelletal.,1983a).Inthelaboratory,themurinehepatitisvirus(MHV)hasbeenextensivelyusedforthestudyofviralpathogenesis,inparticularasacomponentofamodelfordemyelinatingdiseasesofman(Knobleretal.,1982;Watanabeetal.,1983;Massaetal.,1986).TheMHVgenomeisamonopartite
