2、ofimmunizedmicetochallengewiththesameoradifferentstrainofmousehepatitisvirus(MHV)wasexaminedasamodelofchallengeimmunitytocoronavirusinfection.GeneticallysusceptibleBALB/cByJmiceweregivenanintranasalimmunizinginfectionofrespiratory-typeMHV-JHM,MHV-S,orenterotropicMHV-Y.Controlm
3、iceweresham-im-munizedwithsteriletissueculturefluid.Recoveredmicewerechallengedin-tranasallywithMHV-JHM,MHV-Sorsteriletissueculturefluidat30daysafterimmunization.Resistancetochallengeinoculationwasevaluatedingroupsofmiceat4and30daysafterchallenge.At4days,theprevalenceofMHVlesi
4、onsinnoseandliverwastabulatedandMHVtitersinliverweredetermined.At30days,theprevalenceofresidualbrainstemspongiformlesionswastab-ulatedandserumantibodytoMHV-JHMandMVH-Swasquantifiedbyenzymeimmunoassay.MiceimmunizedwithMHV-JHMorMHV-SresistedchallengewiththeMHVhomotype,butMHV-S-i
5、mmunizedmicewerefullysusceptibletochallengewithMVH-JHM.MiceimmunizedwithenterotropicMHV-Ywereonlypartiallyprotectedagainstchallengewithantigenicallyre-lated,butbiologicallydifferentMHV-S.SerumantibodyresponsestoMHVsupportedtheseobservations.Thesedataindicatethatchallengeimmuni
6、tytocoronavirusesisstrong,buthighlyvirusstrain-specific.IntroductionCoronavirusesarecommonrespiratoryandentericpathogensofavarietyofbirdsandmammals,includingman.About15%ofcommoncoldsinmanarecausedbycoronaviruses[25].Thefrequencyofrepeatedcoldsinasingleindividualandthefrequency
7、ofassociationwithacoronaviraletiologysuggestthatanindividualcanberepeatedlyinfectedwithcoronaviruses.Ifso,hostimmunityisineffective,oreffectivelydirectedtowardvirusstrain-specificanti-gens.Mousehepatitisvirus(MHV)isanextensivelystudiedcoronavirusthatmightprovideinsightintothem
