4、lethallyinfectedwithMHV-4.Micesurvivedacuteencephalitisifmorethan5×105cellsofeithertypeofthevirus-specificTcellcloneshadbeentransferredintoH-2-matchedrecipientsby1daypost-infection.AlthoughtheadoptivetransferofbothtypesoftheTcellclonessuppressedviralgrowthandviralantig

5、en-positivecellsinthebrains,asignificantinhibitionofvirusreplicationbythecytotoxicTcellclonewasdetectedpriortothatinducedbythehelperTcellclone.Histologically,celldestructionwasprominentinthebrainsofmicewhichreceivedthecytotoxicTcellclone.Theseresultsdemonstratethatboth

6、theCD8÷cytotoxicTcellandtheCD4÷helperTcellcanprotectmicefromalethalMHV-4infectioninthecentralnervoussystem.Introductionducedcentralnervoussystem(CNS)diseaseinananimalmodel(Wegeetal.,1982;KyuwaandMousehepatitisvirustype-4(MHV-4)infectionStohlman,1990).Intracerebral(i.c.
