2、tsandwithlecturersprovidedmuchguidanceandkeyorientationstothefollowingsyllabus.D.WaughofUniversityofWashington(afellowmedievalRussianist)hasgraciouslygivenhispermissiontouseelementsofhisowncourseontheSilkRoads,aswellasaCDwithanumberoflectures,associatedpowerpoints,andwaysofusinghis“Si

3、lkRoadSeattle”website(http://depts.washington.edu/silkroad).CourseOverviewThiscourseoffersanoverviewoftheculturalandeconomicrelationshipsthatdevelopedacrossEurasiafromthe1stto17thcenturiesC.E.Thecoursewillfocusonthefabled“SilkRoad,”anoverlappingseriesofoverlandtraderoutesthroughCentra

4、lAsiathatconnectedChinaandJapanwithwesternEurope.Theimpactofthe‘silkroad’wasasoftenregionalandlocal,asitwasintercontinental;mosttravellersdidnotcoverthewholeroutebutremainedinareasthatwereindigenoustothem.Thecoursewillexamineanumberofverybroadthemes,suchas:theinteractionofnomadicandse

5、dentarypeoples,thespreadofreligions,culturalconfrontationandsyncretism.Thecourseisachallengingoneforbothinstructorandstudentsinthatitcoversanenormousgeographic,culturalandchronologicalspan.Requirementsofthecourse1.Amapquizwillbegivenearlyinthetermtoensurethatyouhavemadeyourselffamilia

6、rwithapartoftheworldnotusuallywellknowntoAmericans.Itwillcountfor5%ofyourfinalgrade.Youcantestyourknowledgeofthisgeographybeforethequizat:http://depts.washington.edu/silkroad/maps/maps.html2.Therewillbe4shortessaysof4-5pageseachonassignedtopics(seebelow).Eachessaywillcountfor15ofyourg
