3、pulatorscanbeeasilyreprogrammedtoperformdifferenttasks,yettherangeoftasksthatcanbeperformedbyamanipulatorislimitedbymechanicalstructure.Forexample,amanipulatorwell-suitedforprecisemovementacrossthetopofatablewouldprobablynobecapableofliftingheavyobjectsintheve
4、rticaldirection.Therefore,toperformagiventask,oneneedstochooseamanipulatorwithanappropriatemechanicalstructure.Weproposetheconceptofarapidlydeployablemanipulatorsystemtoaddresstheabovementionedshortcomingsoffixedconfigurationmanipulators.AsisillustratedinFigur
5、e1,arapidlydeployablemanipulatorsystemconsistsofsoftwareandhardwarethatallowtheusertorapidlybuildandprogramamanipulatorwhichiscustomtailoredforagiventask.ThecentralbuildingblockofarapidlydeployablesystemisaReconfigurableModularManipulatorSystem(RMMS).TheRMMSut
6、ilizesastockofinterchangeablelinkandjointmodulesofvarioussizesandperformancespecifications.OnesuchmoduleisshowninFigure2.Bycombiningthesegeneralpurposemodules,awiderangeofspecialpurposemanipulatorscanbeassembled.Recently,therehasbeenconsiderableinterestintheid
7、eaofmodularmanipulators[2,4,5,7,9,10,14],forresearchapplicationsaswellasforindustrialapplications.However,mostofthesesystemslackthepropertyofreconfigurability,whichiskeytotheconceptofrapidlydeployablesystems.TheRMMSisparticularlyeasyto-14-reconfigurethankstoit
