4、places,andmoresubstantiallyintegratedwithinphysicalsciencegenerally.Mypurposeinthispaperistoexploretheseprojections,especiallyastheybearon(1)theprincipalelementsofcommonsensepsychology:thepropositionalattitudes(beliefs,desires,etc.),and(2)theconceptionofrationalityinwhichthoseele

5、mentsfigure.Thisfocusrepresentsachangeinthefortunesofmaterialism.Twenty""yearsagoemotions,qualia,andrawfeelswereheldtobetheprincipalstumblingblocksforthematerialistprogram.Withthesebarriersdissolving(Feyerabend1963;Rorty1965;Churchland1979),thelocusofoppositionhasshifted.Nowitist

6、herealmoftheintentional,therealmofthepropositionalattitude,thatismostcommonlyheldupasbeingbothirreducibletoandineliminableinfavorofanythingfromwithinamaterialistframework.Whetherandwhythisisso,wemustexamine.Suchanexaminationwillmakelittlesense,however,unlessitisfirstappreciatedth
