22IgottoknowtwoAfricanstudentsandvisitedthemin1990.Ibecamegoodfriendswiththeirfamiliesanddecidedtogobacktoseethemallagainin1992.Iworkedintheirlocalhealthclinicforacoupleofmonths.ThereIsawchildrenwithillnessesthatcouldbeprevented.

23Itwasterribletotreatchildrenandthentoseethemcomebackagainwiththesameillnessandtoseethemdiewhentheyshouldn’thave.That’swhyIdecidedtoworkindevelopingcountries.

24J:Soin1997youvolunteeredwithMSFandwenttoMalawi.Canyousaysomethingaboutyourworkthere?M:Sure.InMalawi,IwasworkingwithchildrenwhowereaffectedbyHIV/AIDS.Itwasheart-breaking.Childrendiedbecausewedidn’thaveenoughmedicines.

25J:Oh,howsad.M:Yes…butI’mgladtosay,thingsaregettingbetterthere—nowadaysthereareprogrammesforHIVtreatmentthatarehavingverygoodresults.J:That’sexcellentnews.Then,in2001,youwenttotheSudan.Let’stalkaboutyourworkthere.
