2、ofsocialnavigationasatheoreticalframework,itispossibletoanalyzethepatternedbehaviorofoccupantsinavirtualplace.Thispaperisadiscussionoffindingsfromanethnographicstudyofadistanceeducationprogram.Fourtypesofsocialnavigationarepresented:recommender,orienting,anarchistic,andaffirming.Bystudyingt

3、hesebehaviorsinrelationtothepersistentstructuresinavirtualenvironment,itispossibletoidentifyhowthesestructuresaffordsocialnavigation.Itisalsopossibletodetermineifthesebehaviorsoccurbydesignoremergefromsocialadaptation.IntroductionThevirtualworldisasocialworld.Peopleholdasynchronousdiscussio

4、nsonbulletinboardsandinnewsgroups.Theymeetonlinesynchronouslyinchatroomsandinmulti-userdomains(MUDs).TheycreateWebpagestopresentthemselvesortheirinterestareastoothersandarecarefultoincludeemailaddressestofacilitatepersonalcontact.Theyshopinvirtualstorefrontsandbrowsetheshelvesofvirtuallibra

5、riesandmuseums.Inthevirtualworld,peopleworktogetheronprojectsandstudytogetherindistanceeducationclasses.Whilecomputermediatedcommunication(CMC)literaturehasdevotedattentiontosocialinteractions,thestudyofthe“places”wheretheseinteractionsoccurhasbeenthedomainofhumancomputerinteraction(HCI).Th

6、evirtualplacehasbeensynonymouswiththetechnologieslistedabove;peoplemeetinthechatroom,areguidedthroughwebportals,havediscussionsontheWebboardoraskquestionsonthelistserv(Wellmanetal,1999;Jones,1995;Haythornthwaiteetal.,2000).Thestudyofsocialnavigationfocusesonthebehaviorofpeopleinrelationtoth
