3、raturesinmultiplesocialscienceandprofessionaldisciplines,contrastingitwithEmerson’spower-dependencetheory.Recentyearshaveseenanupsurgeinthetheory’scitationsintheliterature,whichweattributeinparttoStanford’spositionofpowerinthenetworkofacademicexchange.Weconcludewithareviewofsomep
4、romisinglinesofrecentresearchthatextendandqualifyResourceDependenceTheory’sinsights,andoutlinepotentiallyfruitfulareasoffutureresearch.2TheremusthavebeensomethingintheairduringthetimeoftheFordAdministration,asahalf-dozenoftheenduringparadigmsforthestudyoforganizationsemergedatrou
5、ghlythesametime—manyofthematStanford.AtheoreticalCambrianexplosionsawthemajorstatementsoftransactioncosteconomics(Williamson,1975),agencytheory(JensenandMeckling,1976),newinstitutionaltheory(MeyerandRowan,1977),populationecology(HannanandFreeman,1977),andresourcedependencetheory(
6、AldrichandPfeffer,1976;PfefferandSalancik,1978).Likeotherproductsofthemid-1970s,suchasdiscoandpolyesterclothing,eachoftheseapproachescontinuestoexerciseinfluencetoday,evenassomeofthecorequestionsaskedbyorganizationtheoristshavechanged(Davis,2005).AndtheCambriananalogyisappropriat
7、e,asalloftheseapproachesexceptagencytheoryevolvedinpartfromacommonancestor,Thompson’s(1967)masterfulsynthesisOrganizationsinAction,andspreadoutindifferentdirectionstobecome(friendly)competitors.Ofalltheseparadigms,resourcedependencetheoryisperhapsthemostcomprehensiveinthescopeofi
