3、ndfunctionalcharacteriza-tionofmembersoftheintegrin,selectin,immunoglobulin,andcadherinfamiliesofadhesionreceptors,andtheirspecificcellularandtissuedistribu-tionhaveonlybeenmadepossiblethroughthedevelopmentanduseofspecificMAbstothesemolecules.Veryoften,thebindingofaMAbtoamembranereceptorinvolvedince
4、lladhesionaffectsthefunctionofthemolecule,andresultsininhibitionorenhancementoftheabilityofthecelltoadheretothespecificligand.ThesefunctionaleffectsofMAbsusuallyreflectadirectorphysicalinvolvementoftheepitoperecognizedinligandinteraction;inothercases,however,thefunc-tionaleffectsexertedbyMAbscanonly
5、beexplainedthroughtheinductionofconformationalchangesintheadhesionreceptor.ThoseMAbsthatreducetheabilityofanadhesionmoleculetointeractwithspecificligandsareusuallyreferredtoas“blocking”or“inhibitory”antibodies.Conversely,thoseMAbsthatareabletoenhancetheinteractionofanadhesionreceptorwithitsligandare
