2、alisticanalysisofthehistoryofbiologyisexceedinglyimportantinunderstandingthecontextofdiscoveries,andthepersonal,psychological,sociocultural,andpoliticalmatrixinwhichideasemergeandarepropagated.Biologyeducationtypicallyduplicatesthehistoricallyimportantprocesswhichl

3、edtothediscoveryofthephenomenaunderconsideration.However,asvaluableastheselessonsare,theextensionofhistoricallyemployedmethodsofproblemsolvingmaynotbemostappropriateintheeducationofstudentsincontemporarylaboratorypractice.Weargueherethatitisfrequentlyimportanttore-

4、examinetriedandtruemethodsofscientificproblemsolvingtoseeif(1)moreefficientandrobustprocedurescanbeconstructedorborrowedfromotherfields,and,(2)morepedagogicallysoundprocedurescanbedevelopedwhichprovidegreaterclarityandchanceofachievingsuccessonthepartofstudents.Web

5、elievethat(1)and(2)areintimatelyconnect-ed.Tothisend,I(JRJ)havebeenexamining(forthelast15years)anumberofproblemsolvingtechniqueswidelyusedingenetics1evolution,biochemistryanddevelopmentalbiology(fourcourseswhichIteachfrequently).Theintentisto.helpstudentswithtechni

6、quesandprocesseswhicheachyearasignificantnumberofstudentshaveconsiderabledifficultycomprehendingandusing.Wereporthereacasewhichhasbeennicelysusceptibletoreanalysisandhasbeensuccessfullyusedinclassroomsfornineyears,namelythedeletionmappingofgenes.Aftergoingthroughth

7、etraditionaladhocsolutionwhichistaughtinbasicgeneticstextbooks,wewilldescribetwoalternativeapproachestosolvingsuchproblems.Weassertthatbothalternativeapproacheshaveseveraladvantagescomparedtothetraditionalapproach.RELEVANCEOFNEWMATHTOBIOLOGYMathematicshasnotbeenstr
