3、.Shelley'sfatherwithdrewhisinheritanceinfavorofasmallannuity,afterheelopedwiththe16-yearoldHarrietWestbrook,thedaughterofaLondontavernowner.ThepairspentthefollowingtwoyearstravelinginEnglandandIreland,distributingpamphletsandspeakingagainstpoliticalinjustice.In1813Shelleypublishedhisfirstimportantpo
4、em,theatheisticQueenMab.Thepoet'smarriagetoHarrietwasafailure.In1814ShelleytraveledabroadwithMaryWollstonecraftGodwin,thedaughterofthephilosopherandanarchistWilliamGodwin(1756-1836).Mary'syoungstepsisterClaireClaremontwasalsointhecompany.DuringthisjourneyShelleywroteanunfinishednovella,TheAssassins(
5、1814).Theircombinedjournal,SixWeeks'Tour,reworkedbyMaryShelley,appearedin1817.AftertheirreturntoLondon,Shelleycameintoanannualincomeunderhisgrandfather'swill.HarrietdrownedherselfintheSerpentinein1816.ShelleymarriedMaryWollstonecraftandhisfavoritesonWilliamwasbornin1816.Shelleyspentthesummerof1816wi
6、thLordByronatLakeGeneva,whereByronhadanaffairwithClaire.Shelleycomposedthe"HymnToIntellectualBeauty"and"MontBlanc".In1817ShelleypublishedTheRevoltOfIslamandthemuchanthologized"Ozymandias"appearedin1818.AmongShelley'spopularpoemsaretheOdes"TotheWestWind"and"ToaSkylark"andAdonis,anelegyforKeats.In1818
