3、167ABSTRACTTomeettheinevitabledeclineinhydrocarbonresources,renewableenergysources,suchaswindenergy,shouldbeimplemented.Thisisapromising,butintermittentenergysource.Inordertoaccountforwind’sintermittency,largescaleenergystoragecanexistincombinationwithwindturbines.Oneofmostadv

4、antageousformsoflargescalestorageisCompressedAirEnergyStorage(CAES).CAESisdesignedtostoreoff-peakenergytomakeitavailableforuseduringpeakdemandperiods.Currently,CAESplantsarelocatedincaverns,whichareuncommoninoccurrence.InordertomakeCAESwindfarmsareliableenergysource,othergeolo

5、gicalstructures,suchasdepletedhydrocarbonreservoirs,needtobeconsideredasastorageoption.ThisstudyhasusedtheECLIPSE100©blackoilsimulatortomodelCAESinitstypicalcavernsetting,inahypotheticalreservoirsetting,andinapotentialCAESwindfarmareainWyoming.Thecavernsettingismodeledafterthe

6、HuntorfCAESfacilityinGermany.ThepurposeofthemodelistoobtainapressurematchbasedoffoftheinjectionandproductionscheduleoftheCAESoperationsatvariouspermeabilities.Thiswasdonebydecreasingtheproductionratesofthefacilityafterconfirmingthatthegivenratesweremaximums.TomodelCAESinareser

7、voir,EZGENwasusedtogenerateananticlinalstructurewith20%porosityandanoriginalpermeabilityof100md.UsingthesameratescheduleaswiththeHuntorfpressurematchmodel,itwasdeterminedthata100mdpermeabilityisunreasonablewiththesehighrates.Permeabilityhadtobeincreasedto1,000mdtoobtainthemodi
