2、arintheorganismislinkedtoflightmechanism.It'spartofthefightandflightmechanism,thatwhenananimalisfrightened--thinkofadeer.Adeerfreezesvery,verystill,poisedtorunaway.AndIthinkthat'swhatwe'redoingwhenwe'reaskingpeopletoengagewithouragendaaroundenvironmentaldegradationandclim
3、atechange.Peoplearefreezingandrunningawaybecausewe'reusingfear.AndIthinktheenvironmentalmovementhastogrowupandstarttothinkaboutwhatprogressis.Whatwoulditbeliketobeimprovingthehumanlot?Andoneoftheproblemsthatweface,Ithink,isthattheonlypeoplethathavecorneredthemarketinterms
4、ofprogressisafinancialdefinitionofwhatprogressis,aneconomicdefinitionofwhatprogressis--thatsomehow,ifwegettherightnumberstogoup,we'regoingtobebetteroff,whetherthat'sonthestockmarket,whetherthat'swithGDPandeconomicgrowth,thatsomehowlifeisgoingtogetbetter.Thisissomehowappea
5、lingtohumangreedinsteadoffear--thatmoreisbetter.Comeon.IntheWesternworld,wehaveenough.Maybesomepartsoftheworlddon't,butwehaveenough.Andwe'veknowforalongtimethatthisisnotagoodmeasureofthewelfareofnations.Infact,thearchitectofournationalaccountingsystem,SimonKuznets,inthe19
6、30s,saidthat,"Anation'swelfarecanscarcelybeinferredfromtheirnationalincome."Butwe'vecreatedanationalaccountingsystemwhichisfirmlybasedonproductionandproducingstuff.Andindeed,thisisprobablyhistorical,andithaditstime.InthesecondWorldWar,weneededtoproducealotofstuff.Andindee
7、d,weweresosuccessfulatproducingcertaintypesofstuffthatwedestroyedalotofEurope,andwehadtorebuilditafterwards.Andsoournationalaccountingsystembecamefixatedonwhatwecanproduce.Butasearlyas1968,thisvisionaryman,RobertKennedy,atthestartofhisill-fatedpresidentialcampaign,gavethe
