2、llyouthatfearintheorganismislinkedtoflightmechanism.It'spartofthefightandflightmechanism,thatwhenananimalisfrightened--thinkofadeer.Adeerfreezesvery,verystill,poisedtorunaway.AndIthinkthat'swhatwe'redoingwhenwe'reaskingpeopletoengagewithouragendaaroundenvironme
3、ntaldegradationandclimatechange.Peoplearefreezingandrunningawaybecausewe'reusingfear.AndIthinktheenvironmentalmovementhastogrowupandstarttothinkaboutwhatprogressis.Whatwoulditbeliketobeimprovingthehumanlot?Andoneoftheproblemsthatweface,Ithink,isthattheonlypeopl
4、ethathavecorneredthemarketintermsofprogressisafinancialdefinitionofwhatprogressis,aneconomicdefinitionofwhatprogressis--thatsomehow,ifwegettherightnumberstogoup,we'regoingtobebetteroff,whetherthat'sonthestockmarket,whetherthat'swithGDPandeconomicgrowth,thatsome
5、howlifeisgoingtogetbetter.Thisissomehowappealingtohumangreedinsteadoffear--thatmoreisbetter.Comeon.IntheWesternworld,wehaveenough.Maybesomepartsoftheworlddon't,butwehaveenough.Andwe'veknowforalongtimethatthisisnotagoodmeasureofthewelfareofnations.Infact,thearch
6、itectofournationalaccountingsystem,SimonKuznets,inthe1930s,saidthat,"Anation'swelfarecanscarcelybeinferredfromtheirnationalincome."Butwe'vecreatedanationalaccountingsystemwhichisfirmlybasedonproductionandproducingstuff.Andindeed,thisisprobablyhistorical,anditha
7、ditstime.InthesecondWorldWar,weneededtoproducealotofstuff.Andindeed,weweresosuccessfulatproducingcertaintypesofstuffthatwedestroyedalotofEurope,andwehadtorebuilditafterwards.Andsoournationalaccountingsystembecamefixatedonwhatwecanproduce.Butasearlyas1968,thisvi
