5、eCourse(MOOC)referstoaspecifictypeofonlinecourse.Themainfeaturesofsuchcoursesarethat:.therearenoformalentrancerequirements;.participationisfree;.theyaredeliveredentirelyonline;and.theyaremassivelyscalable,beingdesignedforthousandsofusers.TheenthusiasmforMOOCsisrelativelyr
6、ecent.ThefirstMOOCwascreatedattheUniversityofManitobain2008(Macknessetal.2010).Itwasnot,however,until2011thatMOOCsbecamewidelyknownoutsideafewNorthAmericaninstitutions.WorldwideinterestinMOOCswasstimulatedbyeventsatStanfordUniversity.IntheNorthernautumnof2011,anopenonline
7、courseinartificialintelligencetaughtbytwoStanfordprofessorsattractedover160,000studentsfrommorethan190countries.TwootheropencoursesincomputingofferedbyStanfordweresimilarlysuccessfulinattractinginternationalparticipation.ThesuccessoftheseexperimentsledtoarashofMOOCstart-u
8、psintheUnitedStates(Mahraj2012).ThefirstwasMITx,anot-for-profitinitiativebegunbytheMassachusettsInstitute
