6、velyrecent.ThefirstMOOCwascreatedattheUniversityofManitobain2008(Macknessetal.2010).Itwasnot,however,until2011thatMOOCsbecamewidelyknownoutsideafewNorthAmericaninstitutions.WorldwideinterestinMOOCswasstimulatedbyeventsatStanfordUniversity.IntheNorthernautumnof2011,anopen
7、onlinecourseinartificialintelligencetaughtbytwoStanfordprofessorsattractedover160,000studentsfrommorethan190countries.TwootheropencoursesincomputingofferedbyStanfordweresimilarlysuccessfulinattractinginternationalparticipation.ThesuccessoftheseexperimentsledtoarashofMOOC
