3、ialswerescattered.IthasbeenthroughthegoodofficesofProfessorKentGuy,directoroftheChinaProgramattheUniversityofWashington,andespeciallyProfessorKarenTurneroftheTheCollegeofHolyCrossthate-Asiahasbeenabletoobtainthiscopyofthedrafttranslationandmakeitavailabl

4、eonline.ItisclearfromcorrespondencealsofoundamongtheprojectmaterialsthatVolumeFourwastocontaintheothertables(biao)fromtheHanshu.Adraft“Forward”statesthatDubs’originalmanuscriptcomprisedover1000pagesoftypescript,anditmentionsseveralotherchaptersandtheirtr

5、anslators.Althoughtherewasconsiderableinterestinpublishingthevolume,theeffortfounderedupontheshoalsofDubs’insistenceonusinghis“Wade-Dubs”systemofromanizationthatwasmeanttoeliminatecompletelytheneedtouseChinesecharacters.NoneofthepressesDubscontactedwaswi

6、llingtoriskpublishingaworkthatutilizedasystemthatwasnotacceptedbyothersinthefield.Thecorrespondenceseemstosuggestthattowardtheendofhislife,DubswasreluctantlywillingtoaccedetotheuseoftheWade-Gilessystem,thoughhecontinuedtoargueforthesuperiorityofhisown.Th

7、edraft“Forward”statesthatunidentified“friendsofHomerDubs,inpartfromaconvictionofthevalueoftheworkandinpartasanexpressionofaffectionandscholarlygratitudetoitsauthor”tookituponthemselves“tocorrectthefailingsofthetypescript...withoutdoinganymoreviolencethan

8、necessarytotheoriginalDubsversion.Insubstance,boththetranslationandthenotesareessentiallyasDubsleftthem;muchofthesupplementarymaterialhashadtobecompletelyrewrittenwithout,itishoped,anythingbutmodestdeparturefromwhatDubshim
