1、IntroductionBilingualeducationisatermthatiscommonlyusedbytheEuropeaneducationCouncil.Itreferstothedisciplineofteachingaforeignlanguageorasecondlanguageasateachingmediumtoteach.Inthiseducationsystem,schools’generalcoursesaretaughtbyforeignlanguagesorstudents’secondlangu

2、age.BilingualeducationwasprevalentintheUnitedStates,Canada,Singaporeandothercountries.However,duetothedifferentnationalconditions,thepurposesofbilingualeducationinvariouscountriesalsovaried.Ingeneral,themodesofbilingualeducationcanbedividedintothreedominanttypes;theyar

3、etransitionalbilingualeducation,maintenancebilingualeducation,immersionbilingualeducation.FromwhichtheCanadianimmersionbilingualeducationisthemostsuccessful.Thefinalgoalofbilingualeducationistoacquiresubjects’knowledgeandtoimprovetheirlanguageskills.Studentsareencourag

4、edtouseasecondlanguagetocommunicatethesubjectcontentswithclassmatesandteachersinordertocontinuouslyimprovetheirlanguageskillsandcriticalthinkingability.Manystudieshaveshownthatbilingualchildrengenerallyhavebettersensitivityinlanguagecomprehensionandtendtobemoreflexible

5、inthinkingmodethanmonolingualchildren.Sincetheearly1970s,theUnitedStates,Sweden,Australia,Finland,Spain,Singaporeandothercountrieshavebegunaseriousofbilingualeducationresearchessuittotheirownnationalconditions,onthebasisofCanadiansuccessfulbilingualeducationresearchach

6、ievements,theobjectiveistofullydeveloplearners'languagelearningpotentials,tomaketheirsecondlanguagebeusedasgoodastheirmothertongue,andtobetteradapttotheworld’sdiversifieddevelopment.ThispaperismainlyfocusonthehistoricalbackgroundofCanadaBilingualEducation.Forsearchingt
