1、CentralParkCentralParkisoneofthoseplacesthatmakeNewYorksuchagreatplacetolive.Thehugepark,843acreslarge,islocatedinthecenterofManhattan.Itsdesignisanexampleforcityparksaroundtheworld.Theparkboastsseverallakes,theaters,icerinks,fountains,tenniscourts,baseballfields,manyplaygrou
2、ndsandotherfacilities.ItisalsohometotheCentralParkZooandtheMetropolitanmuseumofArt.Especiallyduringtheweekends,whencarsarenotallowedintothepark,CentralParkisawelcomeoasisinthishecticcity.ConceptionWhentheterrainfortheCentralParkwasboughtbytheCityofNewYorkin1853,itwasfarawayfr
3、omcivilization,somewherebetweentheCityofNewYorkandthevillageHarlem.The768acreslargeareacontainedshedsfromcolonists,quarries,pigfarmsandswamps.In1857,thecityofNewYorkorganizedacompetitionforthedesignofthisnewpark,whichhadtorivalwiththegreatparksinLondonandParis.AdesignbyFreder
4、icLawOlmstedandCalvertVaux'sdesign,named'theGreenswardPlan'waschosen.ThisplanfeaturedanEnglishstylelandscapewithlargemeadows,severallakesandhills.Windingpedestrianroadswereseparatedfrommainroadsandthehugenumberoftreesensuredthecity'sbuildingswerenotvisiblefromwithinthepark.Cr
5、eationToconverttheswampyareaintotheparkthedesignershadenvisioned,severalhundredthousandtreeswereplanted,morethan3millioncubicyardsofsoilwasmoved,roadsandbridgeswereconstructedandalargereservoirwasdugout.Ittookmorethan15yearsbeforethe20,000workershadcompletedthepark.CentralPar
6、kimmediatelybecameapopularplaceforallNewYorkers,attractingmillionsofvisitorseachyear.FromRelaxationtoRecreationFredericLawOlmstead'sgoalwastocreateaplacewherepeoplecouldrelaxandmeditate.Hesawtheparkasakindofsocialexperimentwherepeoplefrombothupperandlowerclasseswouldmeet,arat
7、herrevolutionaryideaatthattime.AftertheappointmentofRobertMosesin1934asNewYorkCityParksCommissioner,thefocusoftheparkshiftedfromrelaxationtorecreation.Duringmoses's26yeartenureheconstructedmanysportsfacilities,playgroundsandtheWollmanrink.HealsorenovatedtheZoo,andinstalledsev
