4、gaps.Inaddition,theunevennessinthesolid-shellgrowthpatterndecreasesfasterforasmallerwavelength.Suchstudiescanbeusedtotunemoldsurfacesforcontrolofcastsurfacemorphologies.IntroductionStudyofthermalstressanddeformationdevelopmentduringaluminumcastingintheearlystag

5、esofsolidi cationcanbeanimportanttoolforunderstandingtheformationofcracks,liquationorotherdefectsintheingotsurface.Sincethemaindrivingforceofthermalstressdevelopmentinasolidifyingbodyisthetemperaturereductionprocess,controloftheheatextractionthroughthemold-shel

6、linterfaceduringtheearlystagesofsolidi cationisoneofthemostchallengingandimportantproblemsassociatedwithaluminumcasting.Incurrentpracticessurfacedefectsareremovedthroughexpensivesurfacemillingandscalpingprocesses.Understandingthee ectofmoldtopographyontheheatex

7、tractionprocessandtheresultingshellgrowthmayallowcertaincontrolofcastsurfacemorphologiesandthusleadtoareductionofunnecessarypost-castingoperationsneededtoremovesurfacedefects.Theanalysisofthedeformationofasolidifyingbodyissigni cantlydi erentfromthatofastandard
