2、s.Inaddition,abnormalvibrationsandnoise,thatariseinaircraftandautomobilesforexample,arealsoimportantproblemsrelatedtoreliability.Oneofthekeyfactorsinhibitingthesoundnessoftheenergyplantsystemandreli-abilityofequipmentisflowinducedvibration(FIV),whicharis
3、esviaflowandstructuralsystemcouplingorflowandacousticsystemcoupling.ResearchonFIV,rangingfrombasicresearchinlaboratoriestopracticalresearchattheprototypicalindustrialscaleinvariousresearchinstitutesaroundtheworld,hasbeenwidelycarriedout.However,thenumber
4、ofincidentsduetoflowinducedvibrationornoisegenerationleadingtostructuralfailuredonotshowanysignsofsignificantdecline.Indeed,thereisanincreaseinthenumberofincidentswhichmightleadtolossofconfidencefromsoci-etyaswellaseconomicloss.Problemsinnuclearpowerstat
5、ionsareacaseinpoint.Thereasonwhysuchphenomenaariseisbecauseanetworkforthepurposeoftrans-missionofknowledgeandinformationonflowinducedvibrationbetweenresearchers,designers,buildersandoperationmanagershasnotbeenconstituted.Onceavibrationproblemarises,itmus
6、tbesolvedinashorttime.Toachievethis,investigationofsimilarpastcasesisenergeticallycarriedout.However,thenumberofwelldocumentedpreviouscaseswithusefulinformationisverylimitedduetotheveilofbusinesssecrecy.Itisagainstthisbackgroundthattheresearcherswhogathe
7、redattheJapanSocietyofMechanicalEngineersFIVworkshopsundertookthetaskofextractingthemostusefulinformationfromtheliteraturereviewedattheseriesofworkshopsoverthepast20years.Theinformationhasbeenputtogetherintheformofadatabaseinwhichfundamentalknowledgeonfl
8、owinducedvibrationisexplainedindetailandtheinformationvitalforthedesignerisconvenientlycompiledandconsolidated.Wehopethisvolumewillbeusefultoengineersandstudentsbothforthesystematicevaluationandunderstandingofflowinducedvi
