2、Nuts,seemstobeanaccountofhowtheseleaveshavegrownandbornetheirfruit.InFebruary,1859,thewriterreceivedaveryinterestinganonymousletter,calculatedtoexcitethedesireofbecomingbet-teracquaintedwithitsauthor.“Idonotknow,”saidtheunknown,“whetheryouareacollectorofChessCuriosities.I
3、hopeyouarenot.Andyet,IinconsistentlyenclosetitleandspecimenpagesofaChessbookthatwasneitherprintednorpublished,andofwhichtheonlycopyistobefoundinmyChesslibrary(eightyvolumes,withprospectsofaspeedyincreasetoonehundredandthirty—allmodernworksofpracticalvalue.)Thisworkisinten
4、dedtoconsistofaprettycompletecollectionofsuchproblemsashaveappearedinnewspapers,etc.Itnowcontainsaboutfourthousandposi-tions;butwhetherIshallhavethepatiencetomakeanygreatad-ditiontothisnumber,Icannotundertaketosay,althoughmyno-tationisconciseenoughtoenablemetocopyinoneeve
5、ningsometimesasmanyasahundredproblemsandtheirsolutions.”Thetitlepagereferredtowasinprint,andread:“Chess-Nuts;aCollectionofProblemsandEndGames.”IntheCorrespondenceoftheProblemDepartmentoftheChessMonthlywasinsertedanoticeto“Cryptograph,NewYork,”inwhichhewastoldthatthewriter
6、“wouldbedelightedtosee——athisresidence.”Thisledtoasecondmissive,signedbytherealnameofthemysteriouscorrespondent.Areplytothisbroughtathirdletter,inwhichanofferwasmadetoloanthe“Chess-Nuts.”Inanswertoasugges-tion,thewritersays:—“IfIwonderwhetheralargecollectionofVVIAMERICANC
