3、erformcellularwork.Fermentationisananaerobic(withoutoxygen)process;cellularrespirationisaerobic(utilizingoxygen).Alllivingorganisms,includingbacteria,protists,plants,andanimals,produceATPinfermentationorcellularrespirationandthenuseATPintheirmetabolism.Ferm
4、entationandcellularrespirationinvolveoxidation-reductionreactions(redoxreactions).Redoxreactionsarealwaysdefinedintermsofelectrontransfers,oxidationbeingthelossofelectronsandreductionthegainofelectrons.Incellularrespiration,twohydrogenatomsareremovedfromglu
5、cose(oxidation)andtransferredtoacoenzymecallednicotinamideadeninedinucleotide(NAD+),reducingthiscompoundtoNADH.Thinkofthesetwohydrogenatomsas2electronsand2protons.NAD+istheoxidizingagentthatisreducedtoNADHbytheadditionof2electronsandoneproton.Theotherproton
