3、1stcentury.Agro-ecologicalengineeringapproachesaimedatdesignandexplorationofalternativelandusesystemsatvariousscalesmaysupporttheidentificationofappropriatelanduseoptions.Engineeringapproachesarebasedonmathematicalrepresentationsofwell-foundedagro-ecologicalprincipleswhile

4、takingintoaccountavailableresourcesandprevailingland-relatedobjectives.Thegoalofthispaperistocontributetothedevelopmentofaformalizedapproachtoengineercroppingsystemsatthelandunitlevelthatcanbeusedasbuildingblocksforsystematicexplorationsoflanduseoptionsatfarmorregionalscal

5、e.Theapproachforengineeringcroppingsystemsatthelandunitlevelconsistsofthreesteps:(i)goal-drivendesignofcroppingsystems,(ii)quantificationofbiophysicalproductiontargetsand(iii)definitionoftheoptimalmixofinputsrequiredtorealizeproductiontargets.Thispaperdescribestheapproacha

6、ndillustratesitwithexamplesfromtheSudano-SahelianzoneofMali.Explicitattentionispaidtotherequirednumericaltoolsandtheirapplicationtoanalyzeconsequencesofuncertaintyintheperformanceofengineeredcroppingsystems.Usingnumericaltools,uncertaintyismadeexplicitwiththeaimtobetterman

7、ageorreduceit.Identificationofuncertaintyatthedesignersdeskallowstakinguncertaintyintoaccountbeforeapplyingengineeredlandusesystemsinregionalmodelstudiesortestingsuchsystemsinpractice.Problemsrelatedtotheapplicationofnumericaltoolsarediscussed,includingthefutureroleofagro-
