4、iedasseenbytheapplicationlayerofthenetworkasattenuationwasintroducedatthephysicallayerofthenetwork.ThenetworkperformancewasmeasuredforfourgroupsoftestsrunningoverTCPandUDP.Variousscriptsemulatingdifferentnetworkapplicationswereused.Ultimatelytheperformanc

5、ewasevaluatedatdifferentopticalpowerlevels,basedonthroughput,transactionrate,responsetime,andlostdata.Additionally,thebiterrorratecharacterizationoftheattenuatedopticalfiberlinkwasanalyzed.Ultimately,performanceofthefiberopticATM-basedcomputernetworkassee

6、nbytheuserwascorrelatedwithopticalpowerdegradationintroducedinthephysicallayer.Adecreaseinperformancewasfoundasattenuationwasincreased,evenintherangeof“normal”operatingconditions.Asexpected,TCP,althoughnotimmunetosoftfailures,performedbetterthanUDP.Adescr
