5、ausedbyfailingtocomplywithoneoracombinationofthefactorsstatedabove.ThispaperpresentsthestatisticofthegeotechnicalfailuresinvestigatedbytheAuthorsovertherecentfouryears.Casehistoriesofgeotechnicalfailuresofembankments,foundationsandexcavationsarealsopresented
6、togetherwiththecausesoffailures,remedialworksproposedandlessonslearned.Finally,somesimpleguidelinestopreventfailuresarealsodiscussed.2.CATEGORYOFGEOTECHNICALFAILURESFailuresofprojectsonsoftgroundinthispapercanbebroadlyclassifiedintotwobroadcategories.Thefirs
7、tcategoryincludesthoseoftotalorpartialcollapseofembankments,excavations,foundations,etc.Thiscategoryoftenneedsreconstructionand/orstrengtheningmeasures.Thesecondcategoryoffailuresisthoseduetolateralandverticalmovementsresultingtoseveredistortiontocompletedor
