2、ctionofelemcntsandthestructuringofinformationinthesentenccareconsidercd.Englishrhythmisstudiedandthefactorsthatcontributetomaintainaregularstress-timedrhythmarepresented.ArhythmicalapproachtoEnglishpronunciationisproposed,whichinvolvesthepracticeofpronunciationintermsofstr
3、essingandunstressingandinlongerstretchesofspeech.Finally,somematerialforpractisingEnglishstressandrhythmispresented.IntroductionInEnglishteachingpracticethestudyofpronunciationbasicallyconcentratesonthesegmentalaspeetsofEnglish:thepracticeofphonemecontrastsandphonemesequen
4、ces.ThepracticeofEnglishstressandrhythmhasbeentraditionallyneglecteddespitetheexistenceof(i)anumberofdescriptionsinanEnglishteachingframeworkofEnglishwordstress(Kingdon,Fudge),sentencestress(Albrow)andrhythm(Classe,Brown,Couper-Kuhlen),and(ii)practicematerials(Guierre,Tibb
5、its,O'ConnorandArnoldandTooley,amongstothers).Anappropriatestressandrhythmicpatternismoreimportantforintelligibilitythanthecorrectpronunciationofisolatedsegmentsand,infact,stressandrhythmdeterminethepronunciationofsegmentsinEnglish.Stressandrhythmaresuprasegmentalaspeetsth
6、atgivetheovérallshapetothewordorsequence.Ifeasyintelligibilityistobeachieved,itisimportanttogivewordstheircorrectaccentualpatternandrhythm.Thus,thepronunciationofawordwiththeinappropriateaccentualandrhtyhmicpattern,forexample:vocabulary[v9'kasbjul9ri]as[voka'bjulari]profit
