4、ubarachnoidHaemorrhage1.0IntroductionSAHaccountsfor5%ofallstrokeswiththemajorityduetorupturedaneurysms.Othercausesidentifiedareaterio-venousabnormalities(AVM’s),metastases,haemorrhagicprimarybraintumoursandidiopathicreasons.In7-10%ofconfirmedcasesofnon-traumaticSAH,nocauseisfound(i.e.idio

5、pathicSAH).Theestimatedannualrateofaneurysmalsubarachnoidhaemorrhage(SAH)rangesbetween10to28per100,000population.10%ofpatientsdiebeforereachinghospital.Amongpatientssurvivingtheinitialhaemorrhage,withoutdefinitivetreatment(i.e.surgeryorinterventionalneuroradiology),rebleedingisthemajorcau

6、seofmorbidityandmortality(riskofre-haemorrhageis15-20%inthefirsttwoweeks).Afterdefinitivetreatment,vasospasmisthegreatestrisktopatientswithanapproximate7%mortalityandanotherapproximate7%severeneurologicaldeficit.RiskfactorsforSAHincludehypertension,smoking,excessivealcoholconsumptionandsy

7、mpathomimeticdrugs(cocaineabuse).Theseguidelinesarebasedoninternationalguidelines(e.g.AmericanHeartAssociation/AmericanStrokeAssociation)andevidencedbasedresearch.Theseguidelinesarenotmeanttoreplaceorsubstituteforgoodclinicaljudgmentandtheadmittingconsultantmakesdec
