2、ceRobertH.Jackson.TheirpathsalmostcrossedforthefirsttimeinLondoninAugust1945.JacksonwasthereasPresidentTruman’sappointee,negotiatingwithBritish,SovietandFrenchcounterpartstoestablishaninternationaltribunalforthedefeatedNaziswhowereinAlliedcustody.Schlesinger,whowaswiththeOfficeof

3、StrategicServices(OSS)whilealsoservingintheArmy,wasassignedtoLondonafterworkingforthepreviousyearinFrance.Jackson’sstaffincludedOSSpersonnel,butnotSchlesinger—hewastryingtoheadwestwardtowardhomeandfamily,notseekingtojoinwhatwouldbecometheNurembergeffort.Jacksonandhisteamworkedout

4、ofOSSofficespaceinLondon,butnotthebuildingwhereSchlesingerworked.OnAugust15,1945,adaythatbeganwiththeofficialannouncementofJapan’ssurrender,JacksonandSchlesingerendedupinthemassiveeveningcrowdsthatcelebratedinthestreetsofPiccadillyandinfrontofBuckinghamPalace,buttheydidnotruninto
