2、anyacquaintanceswasJusticeRobertH.Jackson.TheirpathsalmostcrossedforthefirsttimeinLondoninAugust1945.JacksonwasthereasPresidentTruman’sappointee,negotiatingwithBritish,SovietandFrenchcounterpartstoestablishaninternationaltribunalforthedefeatedNaziswhowerei
3、nAlliedcustody.Schlesinger,whowaswiththeOfficeofStrategicServices(OSS)whilealsoservingintheArmy,wasassignedtoLondonafterworkingforthepreviousyearinFrance.Jackson’sstaffincludedOSSpersonnel,butnotSchlesinger—hewastryingtoheadwestwardtowardhomeandfamily,nots
4、eekingtojoinwhatwouldbecometheNurembergeffort.JacksonandhisteamworkedoutofOSSofficespaceinLondon,butnotthebuildingwhereSchlesingerworked.OnAugust15,1945,adaythatbeganwiththeofficialannouncementofJapan’ssurrender,JacksonandSchlesingerendedupinthemassiveeven
5、ingcrowdsthatcelebratedinthestreetsofPiccadillyandinfrontofBuckinghamPalace,buttheydidnotrunintoeachother.1ArthurSchlesingermetJusticeJacksonayearlater.JacksonwasjustbackattheSupremeCourtafterayear’sabsenceatNuremberg.Schlesinger,workingforFORTUNEmagazine,
