3、todeterminetheprimeorientationofEuropeanbanks:isitnational,regional,pan-Europeanorglobal?ItisestablishedthatEuropeanbanksarestillprimarilynationallyoriented,thatthenumberofinternationallyorientedbanksissmallandthatglobalactivitiesarealmostaslargeasEuropeanon
4、es.Moreover,thesebanks’Europeanactivitiesareshowntobeclustered,reflectingdifferentregionalorientations.Intheabsenceofsubstantivepan-Europeanbanks,thisdifferentiatedmarketstructurecallsforatailor-madeapproachtosupervisioninEurope.Thissuggestsbuildingonthemode
5、lforconsolidatedsupervision.IntroductionEuropeanintegrationandbroaderglobalisationhavespurredcross-bordermergersandacquisitions(M&As)invirtuallyalleconomicsectors.Untilrecently,thisprocesswaslessprominentinthebankingsector.BoththenumberandvalueofEuropeancros
6、s-borderM&Asinthefinancialsectorhave,however,beenontheriseoflate,reflectingEuropeanbanks’strategicpursuitofdiversificationbenefitsandeconomiesofscaleandscope.Underlyingfactorshavebeenliberalisationandderegulation,aswellasprogressininformationtechnology.Thisd
