2、dChinawascaughtinthedisturbancesoftheCulturalRevolution.InGermany,ChancellorWillyBrandt,throughhisfamous“Ost-Politik”,signedtreatieswithourEasternEuropeanneighboursgivingtheFederalRepublicofGermanysomeleverageinforeignrelations,forthefirsttimesinceWWII.BeijinghadjustresumedtheChineseseatintheUN
3、SecurityCouncilandcarefullyopenedthedoortotheoutsideworld–after150yearsofisolation.WiththeirspectacularvisittoBeijingin1972,RichardNixonandHenryKissingerestablishedrelationsbetweentheUSandChina.Inthisperiodofglobalpoliticalchanges,WalterScheeletravelledtoBeijingonOctober11th1972,tosignthejointd
4、eclarationtoestablisharelationshipbetweenGermanyandChina,aftermonths-longnegotiationsinBonn.BuildingastrategicSino-Germanpartnership40yearsagonobody,noteventhegreatestoptimists,wouldhavebelievedthattherelationshipbetweenourtwocountrieswoulddevelopasitdid.Today,ChinaandGermanyareforeachotherthem
5、ostimportantpolitical,economicandculturalpartnersinAsiaandEurope.Wecallourpartnershipstrategicbecauseittakesalong-termperspectiveandcoversallareasofkeyimportanceforbothofoursocieties.Thefrequencyanddepthofourhighlevelpoliticalexchangesisimpressive:ourtwoleaders,PMWenJiabaoandChancellorAngelaMer
6、kel,metalonefourtimeswithinthelast12months.InJune2011theyheldtheirfirstso-calledGerman-Chineseinter-governmentalconsultationsinBerlin.Bothleadersmetwithalltheirministerstodiscussstrategicavenuesofafuture-orientedcooperation.Theyidentifiedareassuchasenergy,climate,sustainableurbandevelopment,ele
