2、isquestion,itseemsthatwecannotlimitourinquirytothesignsthemselves.Thequestionofhowtheyachievethisreferencemergeswiththequestionofhowwecomeincontactwiththeworld.Howdowegrasptheobjectsreferredtobylinguisticsigns?Whatistheroleoflanguageinthisgrasp?Arelinguisticsignsshapedbytheworld,dra
3、wingtheirmeaningsfromitsdifferentobjects,ordosuchsignsshapethesemeanings?Arewetotakelanguageasanopennesstowhatisbeyonditself--thatis,theworld?Analternateviewisthatwearesealedwithinlanguage.Wecannotescapeitsdeterminationofmeaning.Theissuecannotbedecidedwithoutexaminingourapprehension
4、oftheworld.This,however,raisesafreshsetofquestions.Howdoweintuititsobjects?Howisitpossibleforintuitiontoindependentlyconfirmourassertions?Ifweconceiveoflanguageasdeterminingintuition,suchinquiriesare,ofcourse,fruitless.Sealedofffromthepresenceofwhatisbeyonditself,languagecanonlybeth
5、oughtofasaself-defining,self-referentialsystemofsigns.Ifthisisthecase,thefocusonintuitivepresencecanonlyleadusastray.Itpreventsusfromconfrontingtherealtask,whichisthatofexamininglanguageintermsofitself,i.e.,intermsofhowitdeterminesthemeaningsofitssigns.Onceagain,thequestionoflanguag
6、eexpands.Atissue,here,iswhatwemeanbypresence.Theviewthatappealstointuition1understandspresenceasultimatelydeterminative.Ittakesthepresenceoftheworld--inparticular,thepresenceofmeaningsembodiedinobjects--asresponsibleforthemeaningswordshave.Thisiswhyawordcanrefer,throughitsmeaning,to
7、anobject.Intheopposingview,thenotionthatpresenceisultimatelydeterminativeisa“metaphysicalprejudice.”Toescapethisprejudice,wemust“deconstruct”it.Wemustfocuson“thetensions,the1contradictions,theheterogeneity”withinitsconcept.Oncewehaveabandonedthisprejudice,wecanseethesystemoflinguist
