2、ncludingthecom-position,pHandtemperature,inwhichtherearedifferentinteractionsbetweenmechanical,chemicalandelectricalfields.Inthischapter,amultiphysicsmodelisdevelopedforsimulationoftheswelling/deswellingbehaviourofthehydrogelresponsivetosurroundingpHwhenthehydrogelisimmersedinthebuf

3、feredsolution,calledthemulti-effect-couplingpH-stimulus(MECpH)model.ThemodelisbasedonPoisson–Nernst–Planck(PNP)formulationandderivedincombinationwiththespeciesdiffusion,pendentionizablegroupdissociationreactionandelectricpotentialeffectforthedistributiveprofilesofionicconcentrations

4、andelectricpotentialwithinboththehydrogelandbathingsolutiondomainsinresponsetothechangeinpHofsurroundingsolution.ThePNPequationsarecoupledwithnonlinearmechanicalequilibriumgovern-ingequationforanalysisoflargedeformationofthepH-sensitivehydrogel.TheMECpHmodelisvalidatedbycomparisonb

5、etweenthesimulationresultsandpub-lishedexperimentdataavailableintheliterature.Itisfollowedbycomprehensiveparameterstudiesfortheinfluencesofhydrogelmaterialpropertiesandenviron-mentalsolutionsontheresponsiveperformanceofthepH-sensitivehydrogelwhenplacedinthebufferedsolution.2.2Develo

6、pmentoftheMECpHModelExtensivesearchofliteraturerevealsthatmostofthetheoreticalmodelsareeitheroversimplifiedtolimitapplicabilityortoocomplextoaccountflexiblyforsignifi-cantparametersrequestedbyexperiments.Therefore,theobjectiveofthissectionistoformulateatheoreticalmodelwithclearfundame
