28、ilosophers.Theinterestamongsocialscientistsinatheorywithexplicitbiologicalrootsderivesfromthreefacts.First,the‘evolution’treatedbyevolutionarygametheoryneednotbebiologicalevolution.‘Evolution’may,inthiscontext,oftenbeunderstoodasculturalevolution,wherethisrefers
29、tochangesinbeliefsandnormsovertime.Second,therationalityassumptionsunderlyingevolutionarygametheoryare,inmanycases,moreappropriateforthemodellingofsocialsystemsthanthoseassumptionsunderlyingthetraditionaltheoryofgames.Third,evolutionarygametheory,asanexplicitlyd
30、ynamictheory,providesanimportantelementmissingfromthetraditionaltheory.IntheprefacetoEvolutionandtheTheoryofGames,MaynardSmithnotesthat"[p]aradoxically,ithasturnedoutthatgametheoryismorereadilyappliedtobiologythantothefieldofeconomicbehaviourforwhichitwasorigina
