3、theconsciousnesswasforceduponthem,thatChinaasshehadbeeninthepastwasnotabletomeetthedangerousandaggressivemodernityoftheWest.Idonotmeanthepoliticalmodernitysomuchasthemarchofeconomic,educationalandmilitaryevents.TheseChinesefathers,fathersofthepresentgenerationinChina,weretherealrevo
4、lutionists.Theyforcedoutofexistencetheolddynasticrule,theychangedwithincrediblespeedthesystemofeducation,withindefatigablezealtheyplannedandsetupaschemeofmoderngovernment.Noancientgovernmentunderanemperoreveraccomplishedwithmoreimperialspeedsuchtremendouschangesinsogreatacountry.Int
5、hisatmosphereofchange,thepresentintellectualyouthofChinahasgrownup.WherethefathersimbibedthedoctrineofConfuciusandlearnedtheclassicsandrevoltedagainstthem,theseyoungpeoplehavebeenbatteredbymanyforcesofthenewtimes.Theyhavebeentaughtsomethingofscience,somethingofChristianity,something
6、ofatheism,somethingoffreelove,somethingofcommunism,somethingofWesternphilosophy,somethingofmodernmilitarism,something,infact,ofeverything.Inthemidstofthesturdymedievalismofthemassesoftheircountrymentheyoungintellectualshavebeentaughtthemostextremeofeveryculture.Intellectuallytheyhav
7、ebeenforcedtothesamegreatomissionsthatChinahasmadephysically.Theyhaveskipped,figurativelyspeaking,fromtheperiodoftheunimprovedcountryroadtotheaeroplaneera.Theomissionwastoogreat.Themindcouldnotcompensateforit.Thespiritwaslostintheconflict.Thefirstresult,therefore,ofthehiatuswasundou
